Asthma Action Plan: Creating a Personalized Strategy for Asthma Management

Personalized Asthmatic Treatment Plan

Four amazingly talented, experienced, and licensed pulmonary doctors direct the Texas Regional Asthma & Allergy Center in Southlake, and Fort Worth, TX. Our doctors keep up with trending asthmatic treatment options and want to discuss your respiratory disease and create a personalized action plan.

We can help you to understand how to manage your asthmatic diagnosis while living life to the fullest.

Are You Asthmatic?

A trigger can be environmental or chemical, causing constriction of the airway. When a trigger attacks your lung's airways, it causes the tissue to swell and narrow. These allergens cause you difficulty breathing.

This disease does not go away on its own, and you will need medical treatment provided by our doctors. Even though respiratory disease is a chronic condition, you can live a normal life. The goal of managing your disease is to keep airways open and relaxed.

An Asthmatic Action Plan

Our doctors at Texas Regional Asthma & Allergy Center in Southlake, and Fort Worth, TX, want to help you develop an asthma action plan involving, in part, your peak flow numbers. Our doctors calculate peak flow numbers from averages in your peak flow log.

A peak flow meter is a handheld device used to take a short, forced breath. The numbers on the side of the device can be set to chart your green, yellow, and red zones.

Green Zone

  • The best peak flow number is 80% or higher
  • No wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness
  • Normal breathing
  • Normal function
  • Maintenance medications as prescribed

Yellow Zone

  • Best peak flow number is 50% - 70%
  • Wheezing and mild shortness of breath
  • Can't do everyday activities
  • Rest may be required between activities
  • Requires a rescue inhaler as prescribed by our doctor

Red zone

  • Best peak flow number less than 50% of your best peak flow number
  • Requires a rescue inhaler to breathe
  • Experience symptoms listed above, including abdominal breathing/zero ability to complete tasks/exhaustion/inability to form proper sentences
  • No improvement seen; seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible

The doctors at our state-of-the-art allergy center will set your peak flow in green, yellow, and red zones and provide detailed instructions on when to use your additional medication.

Knowing your personal best peak flow numbers is important. It is worth noting that an illness or infection can also affect peak flow numbers, so taking more peak flow readings during an acute illness is important.
